Warp is linen, weft is cotton. I’m including a small amount of handspun, locally grown linen. It’s from flax that was part of the Rustbelt Fibershed’s first flax crop in their Cleveland Linen Project. I was lucky to be able to help plant and harvest that first crop, and process and spin a little bit of it, too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first picture below shows some of the commercial warp on the warping board. The last two pictures show some of the warp on the warping board that includes my own handspun from the Cleveland Linen Project. I had just over 200 yards and so with 7 yard warp I was able to wind 31 ends into the warp. So in the last two photos, the first 31 ends are my linen yarn. The rest is the commercial linen yarn. The commercial yarn is a bit smoother.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I’m using the pattern found in Handwoven Magazine’s most recent edition. It’s called Bespoke Wedding Towels. Bespoke because each towel will have the wedding date coded into it with patterned stripes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXdbcRqM4bsTp1xDvdMFSBR3O6O-OibJUt1KbNaDRn-R4g5PvpprrmUmGLxffx8pRspZ6IFJ-IyvP8sFtIZ5vlUApZrk3viPUDLWYJq_sqsIc8Z1MdtqnbrXbX2MvAZ33_djuxZEnYKywPL4hRLueR8x6Jmmxdtz-LtoMcUarCfwjkSeuUKbSQ_ITjEqml/s4032/IMG_4509.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXdbcRqM4bsTp1xDvdMFSBR3O6O-OibJUt1KbNaDRn-R4g5PvpprrmUmGLxffx8pRspZ6IFJ-IyvP8sFtIZ5vlUApZrk3viPUDLWYJq_sqsIc8Z1MdtqnbrXbX2MvAZ33_djuxZEnYKywPL4hRLueR8x6Jmmxdtz-LtoMcUarCfwjkSeuUKbSQ_ITjEqml/s320/IMG_4509.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqehQwvEtam-vjXNesAnGz2Nns20V1msCAKkzGfvIsddlCHArkvt3zxtH2Z3ectOYud9IknsyUwpmhysHkdShFCYjAsiNFqQTozxVbHOPJYku6y5PIEYjt89qQ8LpDrj8iGetuIC14efuNdiK1THrUkswooATxL7P7A37BoE2S56L4JyuQBMyfo5znEV7N/s4032/IMG_4536.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqehQwvEtam-vjXNesAnGz2Nns20V1msCAKkzGfvIsddlCHArkvt3zxtH2Z3ectOYud9IknsyUwpmhysHkdShFCYjAsiNFqQTozxVbHOPJYku6y5PIEYjt89qQ8LpDrj8iGetuIC14efuNdiK1THrUkswooATxL7P7A37BoE2S56L4JyuQBMyfo5znEV7N/s320/IMG_4536.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYItBnKCmVw-BPkwJ3iAbtirVf4VBWRdXYhIFaaUD8IGbp9iNwuzTB-amzlh9qdqf5wI_mtwDAQJ05tQzAoa_B_NSZ4aZfHuEbtvreM-X_nqKKCx5_5d7qvSPSEX1jIg1uSthMR-iN1wVcdq4ZchiMfQmUS2q4mTy2Ets_4u_3RbgCkeBtNeTsYElv5xZ1/s4032/IMG_4527.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYItBnKCmVw-BPkwJ3iAbtirVf4VBWRdXYhIFaaUD8IGbp9iNwuzTB-amzlh9qdqf5wI_mtwDAQJ05tQzAoa_B_NSZ4aZfHuEbtvreM-X_nqKKCx5_5d7qvSPSEX1jIg1uSthMR-iN1wVcdq4ZchiMfQmUS2q4mTy2Ets_4u_3RbgCkeBtNeTsYElv5xZ1/s320/IMG_4527.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p>ICQBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08634452093934367498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4176800410822139543.post-74599926914683778112022-07-18T12:56:00.001-04:002022-07-18T12:56:57.972-04:00My yard is wild<p> My yard is wild. No, really. Through combination of scattering native wildflower seeds in certain spots and neglect, my yard has gone wild. I’m embarrassed what the neighbors might think. The lawn is mostly weeds with a smattering of grass. I’m pretty sure the weeds are all natives, or at least naturalized like dandelions. Things like ground ivy, self heal and clover run rampant. It really does all look a mess, but this morning when I opened my front door I startled some goldfinches who were snacking on seeds from some of my flowers, and a yellow tiger swallowtail butterfly was supping on a coneflower while the little golden birds flitted here and there. Every time I walk out my door I am surrounded by the hum of bumble bees. Droves and droves of them. There are always hummingbird moths flitting among the bee balm along with the bees, and occasionally a real hummingbird will fly by. There are so many other interesting things to see that I often want to just wander amongst the flowers and loose myself, but I watch my toddler granddaughter during the day so losing myself is never an option.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxqQZT0iZk2F70gZaDTsFDbT74trBQv1q0Cv5pz3ZUbzVRrmkRPhF0S77d_jrRCJUDWzmqI0J3XcE4DzJuPaCPg36Vge8WrbZmInbVdT7lcR_TRSJiNA8l1V2lGv7es9NUtqb0Sgfq98R5nAn5YlG1RFPU0iJ87_S9BIMV63Oh83LX-t49qXVKv47zQ/s4032/EE82276F-119D-4CE8-9FDA-AFF492AEB018.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxqQZT0iZk2F70gZaDTsFDbT74trBQv1q0Cv5pz3ZUbzVRrmkRPhF0S77d_jrRCJUDWzmqI0J3XcE4DzJuPaCPg36Vge8WrbZmInbVdT7lcR_TRSJiNA8l1V2lGv7es9NUtqb0Sgfq98R5nAn5YlG1RFPU0iJ87_S9BIMV63Oh83LX-t49qXVKv47zQ/s320/EE82276F-119D-4CE8-9FDA-AFF492AEB018.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>ICQBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08634452093934367498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4176800410822139543.post-31716553149168242712022-02-26T17:46:00.001-05:002022-02-26T17:46:43.214-05:00What I made with the fabric woven from handspun singles<p> <span style="font-size: medium;">Here is what I made with the wool fabric I wove from handspun singles (both warp and weft). It’s more of a poncho than a serape. It is closed on the sides at the bottom 5 inches. It was almost a ruana, but I eventually went with what you see instead. I cut up the smaller bit of cloth that I wove on the extra bit of warp I had and added it to the bottom of the garment to get a little more length.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The only raw edge on the whole thing is the bottom front edge, all other edges are selvedges on the weaving and not hemmed. Instead of hemming the bottom of the garment, I hopefully will be tablet-weaving a band with which to decorate it. I probably won’t get to that until the summer.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">It’s kind-of all higgledy piggledy and thrown together. I don’t really have the time or the energy for really precise things right now. Hopefully in the not too-distant future I will. It really was woven as an experiment and I made what I could that seemed easy enough with the fabric. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEif56OkrQpqTlorvGJjzRiQfHnrjgWu0HIGVMYuByAwmqtoxeZh8KbJ45MXqqg2bbTf8Du0T45S9dadD9_7L6D66r2xyDGtkAgZoRPkOPt0007A_Dsc3H0m2PCILp5EmSLVbirzd2uOQNYp9hpTxsIc0Vjnp7gSWGpgwMBf785pUj5rNuuJAj8d3ZbJrg=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; font-size: medium;"> In the last post I showed fabric woven with handspun singles (warp and weft) as it looked straight off the loom. Here it is after fulling. Take up and shrinkage was quite startling in the width. Un-fulled the fabric measured 120” x 25.5”. Fulled it measured 100” x 16”.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">The smaller piece, which was woven in plain weave and with two-ply weft, had much less take up and shrinkage. Pre-fulling it measured 27” x 25.5”. Fulled it measured 21.5” x 21.75”. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">I don’t know if the dramatic difference in the longer piece is due to the twill pattern or the singles in both warp and weft, or a combination of the two, but it is dramatic, especially in the width.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">I have so many questions running around my mind about long-ago weaving, the processing and the results. I read that in medieval times, singles were preferred for weaving. I wonder why. I thought weaving this cloth with singles would result in a light fabric, but I ended up with a thick, cushy fabric. In fact, the smaller piece woven with two-ply weft is much thinner and less cushy. I have more experimenting to do.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi0foSEgq39u9wOERcanUiEqh_29x_OZMmuaxCe0fsWwXrqPYxRwphVlOPavtKBNFK9F1qJGuq0ab9c7HbjrzTtJMUrzmmsA_jIvsHLbh8_1xNW2IjSEC-RZeKT_bd91YstFj27AwZrZxt0vpEpWiurcgnVBkHbdYpbroGNngS9MC7x5DSZJ7j90L1QWA=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi0foSEgq39u9wOERcanUiEqh_29x_OZMmuaxCe0fsWwXrqPYxRwphVlOPavtKBNFK9F1qJGuq0ab9c7HbjrzTtJMUrzmmsA_jIvsHLbh8_1xNW2IjSEC-RZeKT_bd91YstFj27AwZrZxt0vpEpWiurcgnVBkHbdYpbroGNngS9MC7x5DSZJ7j90L1QWA=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjxyy2M6vlbGIBfQ0xZwzYaffObY_SeDt2SPTmgWVYtagn6Ixri-_zrTpR8_wbxQXSRiN6jheaj0oyP3AA8Zv-DdajT_5gSDUZY4_Ouz4LV190BYWr34rfhUKmvFFE3KWGWzVj_JZhbuIDlRmqVY2xkB_3vsyJeoVzOKs8sBevPFzNj7pH_KIdRu5MilQ=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjxyy2M6vlbGIBfQ0xZwzYaffObY_SeDt2SPTmgWVYtagn6Ixri-_zrTpR8_wbxQXSRiN6jheaj0oyP3AA8Zv-DdajT_5gSDUZY4_Ouz4LV190BYWr34rfhUKmvFFE3KWGWzVj_JZhbuIDlRmqVY2xkB_3vsyJeoVzOKs8sBevPFzNj7pH_KIdRu5MilQ=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh54ne9HJhTZ_25_YNFyQ0wtG1xoVS1K63LFOmG_iRWkerQd04U811r5jnG__G597IZyWpnoZD1Lrolb2Zk7M5ltySnI81ZOzQESRp5eZ7P_khUOY5mfSuOTLV7B5PK42z2qkyam63-o1ux-U9e9MNg1K0yM18i0x_gKZdydhykE2pFaPTCcAofQvi64g=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh54ne9HJhTZ_25_YNFyQ0wtG1xoVS1K63LFOmG_iRWkerQd04U811r5jnG__G597IZyWpnoZD1Lrolb2Zk7M5ltySnI81ZOzQESRp5eZ7P_khUOY5mfSuOTLV7B5PK42z2qkyam63-o1ux-U9e9MNg1K0yM18i0x_gKZdydhykE2pFaPTCcAofQvi64g=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitGSLQ_q_bc-C6MisOhCRmJpEyVMcAuMKXxmekYzda_y3srD7mA2aR9mkMv02GCHUgbp31Aua3dlk8ZIPJgy4bLiIpL6ulVlIgL-pcrVrZN0Isl2Xa-AaobDD6fAU1OBSQbFE4Ys09j_kFJRZVOF8yCQCx5ps52d09qAhOYLCk9LBkFH195T8_NLGPzA=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitGSLQ_q_bc-C6MisOhCRmJpEyVMcAuMKXxmekYzda_y3srD7mA2aR9mkMv02GCHUgbp31Aua3dlk8ZIPJgy4bLiIpL6ulVlIgL-pcrVrZN0Isl2Xa-AaobDD6fAU1OBSQbFE4Ys09j_kFJRZVOF8yCQCx5ps52d09qAhOYLCk9LBkFH195T8_NLGPzA=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgz90EOO7FhDeOKKQesjPi4RpSGa-nT_pUYFlPvhkPdXrcwrls15wSl2t71iRlyz-TdaPs8P1QhCf5g7S0T67ZtGANdPhzJPexws-fO2ad9GH7w0suxmqXKRyj1mQRcTJc2Go6imbmPGaerPY0FdvNxEpw-vd6FlAgyY9fPKIszV5cVMcEGeEaSS5SHuw=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgz90EOO7FhDeOKKQesjPi4RpSGa-nT_pUYFlPvhkPdXrcwrls15wSl2t71iRlyz-TdaPs8P1QhCf5g7S0T67ZtGANdPhzJPexws-fO2ad9GH7w0suxmqXKRyj1mQRcTJc2Go6imbmPGaerPY0FdvNxEpw-vd6FlAgyY9fPKIszV5cVMcEGeEaSS5SHuw=s320" width="240" /></a></div></div><br /><p><br /></p>ICQBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08634452093934367498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4176800410822139543.post-50322974455778126922022-02-16T20:35:00.001-05:002022-02-18T16:32:22.149-05:00Cloth woven with handspun singles is off the loom<p> <span style="font-size: medium;">The cloth I wove with handspun singles as the warp and the weft is off the loom! These picture show it fresh off the loom before any washing or fulling. I used gelatin sizing on the singles. I ran out of sized singles at one point (about halfway through the weaving) and scoured my handspun stash for any singles I had. I finished the weaving with un-sized singles. You can see where that happened in the weaving as there is a sudden draw-in of the fabric. Next in the process will be fulling, which will also wash the yarn. I expect some of the whites to brighten up a bit. It measures about 120 x 24 inches pre-fulling.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The smaller plain weave piece is what I wove after finishing the length that I wanted in the twill pattern. I still had a bit of weft so I wove the plain weave with some two-ply yarns I grabbed from my handspun stash. This piece measures about 27x 24 inches pre-fulling.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgKfrNG9941q7AutEdn4GZ9T6njWvbcieUrXB6ZU4cccRP11-fsgGl4pYLle5xvkpKiVryOFtdg9kenYfZQwooXr71jz3Kd3LFsfNortxkDr2hmil0MsNUXKl9BwcNjrEIUithr03hgyBkm11ra9_lfFAT8e1Fn2Ye3OFjCwFj9RzcZI-MGSQV2OP3c1A=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I have been wanting to weave with handspun singles yarn, so I spun up a bunch of woolen-spun singles wool yarn for both the warp and the weft. I usually warp my loom from front to back, but since I was using singles I warped from back to front -something new for me. I also sized all my yarn with gelatin.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">The wool is from a few different breeds, all natural colors. I also have been wanting to weave this large advancing twill diamond pattern for a long time. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I’m about 1/3 of the way through my warp and I am on the last of my weft yarn. I made it for my granddaughter with a small bit of material I wove with a bit of extra warp still on the loom after having finished weaving throw blanket. I had woven the blanket in double weave so that off the loom it would open out to double the width and continued in double weave for this little bit of fabric. After fulling I had roughly a 12” x 54” piece of fabric.</p><p>I had to do some creative piecing to get the fabric to fit into the pattern, but it all worked out really well. I had JUST enough to create the front of the jacket. I am really proud of how it turned out and it’s such a cute little fall jacket on my little granddaughter.</p><p>The fiber was all hand dyed by other artisans and then handspun and handwoven by me. The content of the yarns is wool, silk, yak, linen, and I used a bit of cotton weft in the fabric for the jacket, but not in the original blanket.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7vTbXVKOJPeeAIV1GF3MgOA_icwwhHDfsQ5zRXDiccx50crnBuFvgNJA4p2InSsJGTqwnmrYOAj2fddNrzV_tlsvab4W44attN7_5uq3Y2OJ1s5vn07ZELnF8aAS1i5SzpmPc3B0jFrym/s2048/1F115605-191E-4E64-BD22-04EF25278294.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fact that I was able to weave three yards instead of just two, coupled with the fact that it didn’t shrink up as much as I had anticipated in the fulling process means that I have more cloth than I thought. Pre-fulling it measured 3 yards long, 28 inches wide. After fulling it measures 2.8 yards long, 21 inches wide. </div>

This is 4 yards, 300 ends of Icelandic tog warp ready to go on the loom. Actually, not all of it is Icelandic, I had to supplement with about 50 yards of mixed Cotswold and Gotland that I had on hand because I didn’t have quite enough tog. Altogether it’s 1200 yards of warp.</div>

<br />
<div>
This is the yarn I’ve managed to make from two Icelandic sheep’s fleeces. One of the fleeces, a beautiful multicolored one, was smallish. The other, a white one, was probably average size for Icelandic. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I separated the tog (the longer, stronger outer coat) from the thel (the shorter, finer inner coat). I got about 1,100 yards of tog and about 1,800 yards of thel, both spun into a fine, two-ply yarn. My intentions from the beginning have been to weave with the yarn. I also have 300-500 yards of thicker, combined tog + thel yarn that I spun from fiber left behind in the combs after combing the thel, plus other combined remnants. I won’t use the combined yarn in the cloth I’ll be weaving with the separated yarn.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What I’ve learned so far is in order to make cloth with Icelandic wool, you need many fleeces for just one project, say enough cloth for a dress. My two fleeces will not make enough cloth for me, but maybe there will be enough for a baby outfit for my little granddaughter. I wove a small test swatch and discovered that fulling drastically reduces the size, more than other wools I’ve woven with. The width reduced by 42% and the length by 27%. I have estimated that after fulling the cloth woven at 30 inches by 72 inches I will have a piece of fine wool cloth approximately 17 inches wide and 52 inches long. </div>
<div>
<br />
I read somewhere that traditionally, the household had to present new clothing to everyone in the house (including workers and slaves) by Solstice or Yule or thereabouts, or else you’d get coal in your stocking (lol, not really, but it the equivalent to that) and you would probably be looked upon as lazy. Well, if you were producing that much cloth and clothing every year, you certainly weren’t lazy. That on top of all the cloth produced to sell and trade - after all, vadmal cloth was the backbone of the Icelandic economy.<br />
<br />
So what I’ve learned so far is it had to take a lot of sheep and a lot of work to keep everyone clothed and to produce enough cloth to keep the economy thriving. Everyone must have been spinning in every spare moment.</div>

For Christmas I am weaving a baby wrap for her. It's a really long wrap that can be tied on one's person in such a way as to hold a baby or toddler against you, keeping your hands free to do other things.<br />
<br />
The weft is all handspun and hand-dyed by me. No wool. It's all plant-derived fiber and silk. There is just over 5,000 yards just for the weft, so I went with commercial cotton for the warp, which is 8 yards long and 648 ends.<br />
<br />
The spinning was a lot of work and the dyeing was a little different from my usual. I dye mostly with natural dyes and acid dyes, but for most of the fiber, I needed fiber reactive dyes. I was nervous about using them for the first time on such a big project. I only screwed up a little in that the colors on all of the plant-derived fibers came out pastel when I wanted them to be stronger. The silks came out much stronger. And then I have some carbonized bamboo that is undyed because it's a dark gray. Doesn't really fit with the color scheme, but I'll make it work somehow.<br />
<br />
I chose the fibers to be wicking and breathable and washable. I hate giving new mothers things that have to be hand washed.<br />
<br />
Anyhoo, I got the warp on the loom - am I the only one who gets blisters when warping? And I've started the weave. I'm about 30 inches in on a 202-inch weave. Pics below.<br />

Okay, I haven't posted anything in a while, and I'm not sure what kinds of changes Blogger may have made lately, but I'm having trouble with this post. It has a lot of pictures. I have tried to write commentary to go with the pics, but my whole draft keeps disappearing, even if I save as I go. So I will just say a few words here and add the pictures, hopefully you can get the gist of what I did through the pictures.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I made a jacket using naturally-dyed, handspun, handwoven wool. This was my process:</div>

I finally got a loom! I got it a few months ago as a birthday present. So far I've woven two handspun wool scarves, twelve cotton kitchen towels, handspun wool fabric with which I made a skirt, and three handspun silk scarves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just finished the scarves today. I spun up three types of silk to weave them with. In the picture below they are Red Eri, Tussah, and Muga.</div>

<br />
<br />
I didn't<i> totally</i> mess them up, but the twill scarf is the best. I wove the plain tabby intentionally very open. That one is the second-best. The third scarf I wove in a loose, but not open tabby - not a plain tabby, but I can't remember the name of it. It came out least-well of the three.<br />
<br />
Here are they are, all dry after being wet-finished and pressed:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0XV2NQDjF9GP2R1XQIHe-cy9qhgRmAl3EBpqeyzvTwUWpXnlyeiuPL6ujXEvle_SWDRC1CmJfyGUBgWH4BWf9B4aHaj6Q1ZCTMXdwtgr9ASq1kMNHNPq7ufEb0nMsNF8s8m3zjIaH-_wP/s1600/silk+scarves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><i></i><img border="0" data-original-height="959" data-original-width="1280" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0XV2NQDjF9GP2R1XQIHe-cy9qhgRmAl3EBpqeyzvTwUWpXnlyeiuPL6ujXEvle_SWDRC1CmJfyGUBgWH4BWf9B4aHaj6Q1ZCTMXdwtgr9ASq1kMNHNPq7ufEb0nMsNF8s8m3zjIaH-_wP/s320/silk+scarves.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A few things I learned: sampling is a good thing. I didn't do it with these and wish I had. Also, the warp with silk can be sett closer than you might think. And when tying the warp onto the front beam, I wouldn't recommend lashing it on, but rather tying it on - I think that would disrupt the weave of what you wind on a lot less (I had a problem with the lashing cord and knots pushing the weave structure apart when the cloth was wound around the beam). And if you are going to weave with silk for the first time, you should probably use less expensive silk than eri, tussah and muga. <br />
<br />
You may be asking yourself why I would weave with expensive types of silk on my very first foray into silk weaving. The answer is that these are the only types of silk I had on hand. Now my supply has been exhausted, but I am eager to get more silk, probably mulberry this time, and weave some more!<br />
<br />
Even though the scarves aren't perfect, they are still extremely beautiful, solely because of the beautiful nature of silk, and these types of silk in particular. I was hoping that they would be good enough to sell, but I think only the twill one is good enough, unless I explain the less-than-perfect nature of the others in their description and price them accordingly. They actually have a sort-of rustic-woven charm to them that some people might like.<br />

<br />
<div style="margin: 16px 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; margin: 0px;">Before seeing the movie Wonder Woman, I
saw some headlines like, “<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Why I Cried
During Wonder Woman</i>.” I saw the movie. I didn’t cry, but afterward, I did
read one of those articles. The gist is that seeing kickass women, women who
aren’t slut-shamed even while being kickass, or who aren’t confident and
kickass as an aberration, but because that’s what they and every other woman
around them truly are, is so amazing to see up there on that big, beautiful
silver screen, that it brings tears to the eyes. Tears of liberation. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 16px 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; margin: 0px;">I’ve been told <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">no</i> my whole life, just like every other woman on the face of the earth.
And it was good to see Diana encounter that and not understand it. You can see
the confusion on Diana’s face when the men around her are telling her <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">no</i>. Every woman understands that
confusion. Every girl has grown up and come to that moment when she is about to
do something, but the people around her tell her <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">no</i>. To know that you are capable, and yet you are not allowed,
either because others assume you aren’t capable, or simply because of your
gender, not just once, but repeatedly – daily – can wear a person down. When
Diana does it anyway, that’s what brings people to tears. She shows everyone that
this is what women are, this is what we’ve always been – what we always could
have been if only we had been told <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">yes</i>,
every time we’d been told <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">no</i>. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 16px 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; margin: 0px;">It’s refreshing to see Diana do her thing
and to speak up – not in a whispered voice, but really speak up and state the
truth of things, to speak her mind like most other male superheroes do without
it being an unusual occurrence – without everyone in the audience thinking
someone is going to shut him up any moment now. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 16px 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; margin: 0px;">It’s ridiculous to think that the world
wouldn’t want half of its population to be this kickass. Why wouldn’t we want
every single person to use their capabilities? Why wouldn’t we want every
single person to have a voice? Why would we want to quash girls’ abilities so
often that as women, our kickassedness is hidden deep within on our own inner islands,
like the Amazons in the movie are hidden on Themiscyra.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 16px 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%; margin: 0px;">Well, Diana has left that island and broken
out into the world. This has brought some women to tears, but we’ve all known
about her. Every woman <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">is</i> her. Cry or
don’t cry, but remember this, she isn’t going back. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></div>

My daughter took these pictures of me in my new skirt. I raided my Etsy shop and used a bunch of the yarn to knit this skirt. I wanted a mindless knitting project, and this was it! The pattern is the Ribbed Pencil Skirt on Ravelry. I think there are about 1800 yards of handspun in this skirt. It's really comfy. </div>

You see, in most of my writing there is an undercurrent. I have always been aware of the differences with which men and women are thought of and treated, and the differences in the opportunities afforded each gender, not just in my home country here in the U.S., but globally. These differences have never been subtle, in fact, it was at the tender age of seven that these differences began to rankle. Seven. How obvious do things need to be for a seven-year old to be able to notice. And so my antagonists are usually women and my writing usually highlights ability and self-reliance to a degree, but also what can be achieved through friendship, and people having one-another's back.<br />
<br />
And so when the Women's March on Washington began to be organized several months ago, my first thought was, "I have to be there," - for me, for Yazidi girls and women, for child brides, for victims of FGM, for the woman who is controlled by her boyfriend/husband, who is abused by her boyfriend/husband, for victims of sexual assault and violence, for the woman who is suddenly afraid of that man walking behind her, or who suddenly has to calculate her every word or gesture because things at the party, the bar, her workplace just became questionable. And the list goes on.<br />
<br />
The only thing is that after having bouts of feeling really terrible over the past several years, I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Which sucks. I used to be really active but I've slowed down quite a bit lately because of the hurting all over thing. Getting to the march (from northeast Ohio), and then marching seemed like it might be kind of painful.<br />
<br />
Then I heard about the pussyhat project. That made me really happy. I'm a knitter, so I knitted a lot of hats grateful that I could do this to contribute. But as the date for the march drew nearer, I can't tell you how deeply I felt I was letting myself and my convictions down by not attending. And then my daughter suggested that we go. She's newly married and lives a couple of hours away. How could I not go with my daughter who is strong and doesn't take things from anybody and wanted to be a part of this wonderful thing.<br />
<br />
So I thought about it. And my character Gwyn from my book, "The Errand Rider," came to mind. She is traveling alone, by horseback at one point in the book and is injured. I'm sure she's tired and uncomfortable and pain is involved, but she goes on. She has quite a big journey still ahead of her and she will be in even more uncomfortable places and have to deal with other aches and pains, but she never complains and she doesn't stop. She goes on and gets the job done, and in the process saves a little prince and two realms to boot.<br />
<br />
Now, by myself I can't save anything, but as part of a collective movement, who knows what can be accomplished? So in the end, my daughter and I followed all of those hats I made to Washington and together with hundreds of thousands of others, we got the job done. We added our voices to the millions around the world who roared with the message that women will be heard. And we're not stopping there. We will do what we can when we can to further women's causes and voices around the world.<br />
<br />
So thank you Gwyn, for being an inspiration to me.<br />

I've been carding up waste wool to use as mulch in the backyard garden boxes. <div><br></div><div>I also knitted up some socks with some of the better wool that's left in the combs after combing fiber. I think there are three different shows, if there are more, let me know! Anyway, they are Tudor Monastery Farm, Victorian Farm, and Edwardian Farm. In the shows, three people live the life of farmers in that particular era for a year. The shows are so interesting, I love them. The other day, after watching Edwardian Farm episode V, I was inspired to make pound cake and ginger beer. I've got the ginger beer doing its thing in a dark closet. It should be ready in a few days. The pound cake is just about ready to come out of the oven and smells delicious.<br />
<br />
One other thing I've been up to is Eco-printing. Here is a cotton carry-bag that I printed with things from my yard:<br />

I don't know how long the color will last before fading. I did mordant the bag before hand, so that might help a bit.</div>

She forbade herself to buy any new yarn until she had used up all of her stash. Well I have put myself on a fleece diet. I am working my way through the fleeces that I already have before purchasing any new ones. I' not even going to Maryland Sheep and Wool this year. I'll really miss it, but if I just can't handle the diet, I can hop over to the Great Lakes Fiber show, May 28-29. Hopefully my Etsy shop will slowly fill with all of the yarn I will be making : )ICQBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08634452093934367498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4176800410822139543.post-25421069739276092932016-04-27T09:04:00.000-04:002016-04-27T09:11:51.284-04:00Update On Treating Fibromyalgia with Teasel Root TinctureTo see my previous posts on this topic go<span style="color: #20124d;"> </span><a href="http://inconsequentialblogger.blogspot.com/search?q=teasel+root+tincture"><span style="color: #274e13;">here</span></a>.<br />
<br />
I made some teasel root tincture and took it three times a day for six weeks. I started out taking three drops three times a day and upped the dosage until for the last couple of weeks I was taking about ten to fifteen drops three times a day. <br />
<br />
Has it helped? My cautious answer is, yes. I say "cautious answer" because although I have been feeling really good, I don't want to subscribe it to the tincture just yet. If I continue feeling good for a good long time, then, yes, I believe it is the work of the tincture. I tried the tincture last summer, around July, and I felt really well until the end of December/January. I'm hoping this time around I will continue to feel well for several months, too. <br />
<br />
Am I cured? No. There is less pain, yes, but what it really seems to help with is the gumption factor. I feel like doing more, I have more energy, and my mind is clear of that fog that sometimes descends. There are still days where everything hurts, but it's not as severe. Things have sort of leveled out.<br />
<br />
Last August, after taking the tincture, I completed the Akron Marathon with my family as a relay. I walked my leg of the relay, and it was the shortest leg, but the point is, I felt well enough to train for and walk the 3.4 miles at a very brisk pace. I continued with the walking until I started to feel bad again in December/January. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm walking again. I won't be doing the marathon again this year, but I have the energy now to help my daughter with her wedding planning - which, believe me, takes a lot of energy.<br />
<br />
You still can't over-do things. You can feel when your limit is coming on, at least I can. Sometimes I can do that extra loop around the park, and sometimes I can't, but at least I was able to get out there and do that first one, or two!<br />
<br />
So would I recommend teasel root tincture to help with your fibromyalgia? Yes. Be sure to stick with it for the whole six weeks. You may not begin to feel results until the last week. And do your research. Learn about teasel root and what it is used for. <br />
<br />
Teasel root tincture can be purchased or, if you are confident about your plant identification skills, you can make your own. Remember that you must use the first year plant which is low to the ground, not the second year plant, which is the one that grows tall and flowers. It's not hard to make tinctures, research how to do it. I used the fresh root, but some might prefer to use the dry root. I ground my roots up in a food processor with a bit of very high-proof vodka, then put it in a jar, covering the ground root with vodka. When you've done this, place your jar in a dark place like a closet and shake it once or twice a day for two weeks. Then strain the roots out, giving them a good squeeze to get all of the goodness out, strain it once more through a coffee filter, and voila! You've got tincture. <br />
<br />
If you try teasel root tincture, I hope you have good results, too. If you have Lyme disease and are on medication for Lyme cysts, do not take teasel root tincture, as that particular medication should never be taken with alcohol. Please do your research before taking the tincture. And good luck!<br />

It was a big project, especially since I've only knitted one other lacey shawl before. I wasn't sure I was up to this skill-level wise, but the pattern was written so well that it was a pleasure to knit. For those who want to know, it's the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/alberta-shawl"><span style="color: #20124d;">Alberta Shawl</span></a> pattern on Ravelry.<br />
