Footage of the elusive crabapple caught in the jungles of northeast Ohio

My son and I took the dog out in the woods today. We came upon a large patch of tall, thick reeds, on the other side of which we thought we spotted a crabapple tree. We were right - it was tough going, but we forged our way through the reeds and found the tree:

It was like trying to get through a jungle. And we'll have to do it all over again in another week or so when the crabapples are ripe.

What I won't do for crabapple jelly.

Hi Jane!

Hopefully when we go back our trail through the reeds will still be there to follow!

And Strider likes to lead - when he can't, he keeps right at your heels until he gets the chance to grab the lead again : )

Your son must really love you. Or crabapple jelly. Or both! :)

I've never tried crabapple jelly, but if it's worth all that I'll have to find some (already in the jar).

Hi adrienne!

It is worth all that! It's my favorite jelly, although I made some wild blackberry jelly a couple of weeks ago which comes in at a close second.

Mmm... jelly. I'm off to make some toast......

An adventure indeed...and one I am sure your son will remember fondly in his dotage.

What is crabapple? Is it a type of apple?

I know of a great spot for crab apples, but it's not as difficult as yours :) Lovely pictures of your garden, I love to see what others are up to as the Seasons change :)

I've just been reading some of your Halloween posts and love the effort you put in to attract the children! We also live at the end of a private drive and it used to be sooo spooky before they cut down the trees. I'd love to do something similar, but fear I'd end up with yobs and vandals. But I'm thinking anyway :)

Hi ricki! - I hope my son remembers it, because we have to find it again to get the ripe crababpples!

Hi Ocean Girl! - crabapples are a type of apple, only much smaller and extremely tart. But they make the best jelly in the world!

Hi Yarrow! I've been searching for someone who has a crabapple tree in their yard so that I can simply ask if I can have some of their fruit, but no one grows any around here it seems : ( Wish I had an easy source too! And it's very unusual, but we haven't fixed a theme for this year's Halloween decorations. My daughter is in a wedding today with a medieval theme - her bridesmaid dress is medieval, so we are thinking something along those lines so that she can wear her dress again.
